The early years

Martin Luther King Jr. was born into a middle class black family in Atlanta. He entered college early and followed his father into the ministry. While working toward his divinity degree he studied the nonviolent philosophy of India’s Mahatma Gandhi.

Martin Luther King Jr. is born in Atlanta to Rev. Martin Luther King and his wife Alberta.

1944

Enters Morehouse College in Atlanta at age 15.

Feb. 25, 1948

Ordained as a Baptist minister and appointed associate pastor under his father at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta.

June 8, 1948

Graduates from Morehouse with a bachelor of arts degree in sociology.

June 8, 1948

Graduates from Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester, Pa., with a bachelor of divinity degree.
