An important element of Kwanzaa is the lighting of seven candles, each representing one of the principles upon which the holiday is based: unity, self-determination, responsibility, cooperation, purpose, creativity and faith. The service will also include the beating of drums, ringing of bells, wearing of African clothing and sharing of the Karamu — food and fellowship. A guest speaker will be featured during the event, along with a spoken word artist and special music. Easter Hill United Methodist Church is located at 3911 Cutting Blvd. in Richmond. For more information, call (510) 235-4226. Oakland Public Library to close for holiday week The Oakland Public Library will be closed for slightly more than one week for the holidays and in response to the citywide budget shortage. The library will be closed from Dec. 24 through New Year’s Day, resuming normal hours on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010 “We regret not being able to keep our libraries open for our patrons during the week between Christmas and New Year’s, but given the city’s budget situation, we determined that some additional savings could be achieved if we closed for an extended period,” Library Director Carmen Martinez said. No materials checked out from the library are due during the last nine days of 2009. The library is asking that patrons not attempt to return books or other checked-out materials during the break. Book receptacles often fill up and overflow when the library is closed for several days, resulting in the loss of library materials. During the break, patrons can still access the catalog and all databases via the library’s Web site, www.oaklandlibrary.org. Patrons can place materials on hold and renew checked-out materials as long as they have their library card and PIN. If they do not have a PIN, they can get one by visiting the circulation desk at any branch before Thursday. For more information, call (510) 238-3511. Alameda County Art Commission calls for artist applications
Many of Alameda County’s capital improvement projects include a percent-for-art program in which professional artists are commissioned to make artwork for each site. Due to the upcoming schedule of construction projects, many of the artists commissioned for these public art projects will be selected from two registries of pre-qualified artists. Artists who are accepted into the registries will be considered for public art projects related to the Highland Hospital Acute Care Tower Replacement Project, Castro Valley Boulevard Streetscape Project and the San Lorenzo Library Renovation Project. Additional projects may be added to this list and may be related to youth services, health care, social services, public protection and general government programs. There are opportunities for Alameda County artists who are making small- to mid-sized, wall-mounted, two-dimensional or low-relief artwork as well as artists throughout the state of California who have experience making permanent, site-specific public artwork. Opportunities will be available for exterior and interior projects for artists working in a variety of materials and styles, and with a range of project budgets. Information meetings for artists interested in applying for the registries will be held on Thursday, Jan. 14, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Lakeside Plaza Building, located at 1401 Lakeside Drive, Suite 1107, in Oakland (near the Lake Merritt BART station); and on Tuesday, Feb. 2, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Castro Valley Library, located at 3600 Norbridge Ave. in Castro Valley (near the Castro Valley BART station). For more information, visit www.acgov.org/arts and click on “Opportunities,” or call (510) 208-9646.
