Bay Area groups pay tribute, encourage testing on World AIDS Day

Bay City News Service

Bay Area organizations spent the 21st annual World AIDS Day urging people to get tested and remembering those who have lost their lives to the epidemic.

In San Francisco, the nation’s only federally designated national AIDS memorial hosted a remembrance ceremony Tuesday.

On World AIDS Day, the National Coalition of 100 Black Women launched its sixth annual “Sistahs Getting Real About HIV/AIDS” billboard campaign. The group kicked off the campaign during a press conference at Beebe Memorial Cathedral in Oakland. Gary Pike, a spokesman for the event, estimated that nearly 300 people gathered in the meadow of the National AIDS Memorial Grove in Golden Gate Park for a program that featured music, speakers and awards to people who have worked to make inroads in the fight against HIV and AIDS.

The San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus and the Voices Lesbian Choral Ensemble performed, and panels from the world AIDS quilt and mementos left in the grove by victims’ loved ones were on display.
