Summit encourages students to stay in school, on right path National studies show that roughly one in three students drop out of high school. Most of these students are consigned to a future of low wages, little career advancement and diminished opportunities to provide for themselves or their families. Failure to complete high school dramatically increases mortality rates and the chance of incarceration.

Parents, students, teachers and school district officials gather into small groups to Because of these alarming statistics, the Oakland Unified School District, in partnership with several local businesses and organizations, sponsored Oakland’s Promise Drop Out Prevention Summit Saturday at Castlemont Community of Small Schools. “We must demonstrate to young people, through our words and our actions, that we are prepared to support them through adolescence, in their graduation from high school and in fulfilling their dreams for the future,” said Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums, who was scheduled to speak to the students but had a last-minute family emergency. |
