Globe Sports Shorts Warriors take time to give back The day before their final preseason home game, Golden State Warriors Acie Law, Speedy Claxton and Devean George were busy giving back to an important cause, CityTeam Ministries. More than 150 men, women and children were served a warm meal by the players as a part of the NBA Cares Week of Service.
“(The Warriors) wanted to partner up after being impressed with a DVD I sent them,” said CityTeam Ministries director Chris Williams. “They came on-site and I took them on a tour. From there they wanted to maximize an opportunity to do community service with us here.” CityTeam Ministries provides shelter and services to Oakland’s homeless. For the past several years it has teamed up with the Warriors to provide meals to those in need. In business for more than 50 years, the organization also offers medical services, drug and alcohol recovery programs, assistance for low-income families and a learning center to help meet the educational needs of its clients. For more information, visit www.cityteam.org. First Hispanic in space honored Astronaut Jose Hernandez recently was honored at a Raiders pre-game ceremony as the first Hispanic to fly in space. A Stockton native, Hernandez was always a lover of math and science growing up and said he bleeds silver and black. He wanted to show his dedication to the Raiders by taking his flag into space with him, and he presented Raiders legend Jim Otto with the framed flag at mid-field prior to the game. “I contacted the organization and they invited me here today,” said Hernandez, who made history on Aug. 28. He described his 14-day space journey — which ended Sept. 11 — as “unbelievable.”
