‘Remember Them’ project recognizes three to be honored in monument
Unlike the other students, who entered school without much fanfare, Ruby’s entrance stood out: Walking with head held high and shoulders back, the 6 year old marched proudly into the newly integrated school — becoming its first black student. Seventeen years earlier, 13-year-old Leon Leyson began working in one of the factories owned by Oskar Schindler. One of the youngest surviving members of 1,200 Polish Jews whose lives were saved by the German industrialist, the young teen survived while thousands of others died around him, included an older brother who chose to go with his girlfriend to one of the concentration camps versus being saved like the other members of Leon’s family. |
