‘Remember Them’ project inches closer to being a reality

By Michelle Fitzhugh-Craig

With a goal of helping to ensure 25 global humanitarians are never forgotten, the “Remember Them: Champions for Humanity” project is inching closer to becoming a reality.

The inspirational and educational project has as its centerpiece a world-class monument featuring 25 humanitarians. The life-size pieces will call the Henry J. Kaiser Sculpture Park in Fox Square in downtown Oakland home.

“Remember Them” spokesman Bob Agnew said the project — with $2.8 million of the $7.1 million goal raised to date — is scheduled to unveil its first bronze piece early next year. Oakland’s Mario Chiodo is the inspiration and artist behind the project, which began shortly after the Sept. 11 attacks. For the past four years, he has donated more than $1 million of his time to the project.

“The message is clear,” Agnew said of the work being put into it and the stories of the 25 individuals to be featured in the four monuments. “You can do anything.”

“Remember Them” is a nonprofit project of the Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce Foundation. Major supporters include Kaiser Permanente, AT&T, Bank of America, Rotary International #3 (Oakland), Horizon Beverage, The Whalen Family Foundation, Carol H. Williams Advertising and 100 Black Men of the Bay Area, to name a few.

As the project begins its final stages, the Globe will highlight monthly the progress of the monument, the people behind it, the inspirations propelling the project and the purpose and goals for creating it
