Oakland welcomes new police chief
On Monday, Mayor Ron Dellums held a press conference at City Hall to introduce the city’s newest police chief, Anthony Batts. “This is an extraordinary day for Oakland,” Dellums said. “Through national research we found the best that we could find … and now we have an experienced police chief that understands the environment, is practicing and utilizing the principles and values of community policing, has a comprehensive approach to public safety and is committed to reform.” “I am humbled for this opportunity and have a great deal of pride in serving the people as a whole,” said Batts, 49. “It is normal for chief of police to move in the industry and go to locations and do the best you can to address the issues. I had a great career in the city of Long Beach and put together a team and got out of the way.” Batts said his decision to turn his sights on Oakland came after four of its police officers were gunned down on March 21.
