Swimming makes a big splash in Oakland

By Felicia Purcell-McDaniel,

Harrison HarveyThe swimming pool at Castlemont High School was a scene fit for primetime television Saturday when the Oakland Parks and Recreations Summer Swim League hosted the All-City Championship Swim Meet.

More than 400 of Oakland’s most skilled athletes where part of the six swim groups that participated in the two-day event that included youth ranging from ages 6 to 18.

Stamina, commitment and good sportsmanship are just some of the many positive ground rules that the parks and recreation department requires of the swimmers.

“It is important to have a good attitude in swimming,” said Nkosazana Nkululeko, who began swimming at the age of 16.

Graduating this past June from Asa Academy with a 4.2 GPA, Nkululeko will attend Mills College in Oakland on a full swim scholarship, becoming the first African American in the school’s history to do so.

For Harrison Harvey, this was his first competitive event as a member of the West Side Sea Dragons, and the first-year swimmer already had his motivational ritual down.
