Swimming makes a big splash in Oakland
More than 400 of Oakland’s most skilled athletes where part of the six swim groups that participated in the two-day event that included youth ranging from ages 6 to 18. Stamina, commitment and good sportsmanship are just some of the many positive ground rules that the parks and recreation department requires of the swimmers. “It is important to have a good attitude in swimming,” said Nkosazana Nkululeko, who began swimming at the age of 16. Graduating this past June from Asa Academy with a 4.2 GPA, Nkululeko will attend Mills College in Oakland on a full swim scholarship, becoming the first African American in the school’s history to do so. For Harrison Harvey, this was his first competitive event as a member of the West Side Sea Dragons, and the first-year swimmer already had his motivational ritual down. Full Story |
