Lakefest '09 revives past success of Festival at the Lake

By Marcus Osborne

Lakefest 2009For years, the city of Oakland hosted the annual Festival at the Lake. It was Oakland's grandest celebration of its rich history, eclectic citizenship and diverse interests.

Every summer, for a few days, the Lake Merritt area was transformed into the hot spot for families and fun. By any measure, the Festival at the Lake was a rousing Oakland success story. However, the annual event grew to be such a monstrous success - drawing thousands to Lake Merritt's expansive park area and with it, instances of disruptive behaviors - that the annual event was stopped.

Fast forward to this past weekend when Lakefest '09 took place along Lakeshore Avenue - year two in the city's newest efforts to draw out the public and swell civic pride.

However, some said they were surprised they didn't hear more about the festival.
