Hundreds attend Oakland Parks and Recreation centennial celebration

By Marcus Osborne

For a city as consistently maligned by the public and media outside - and even by some within its borders - Oakland knows how to give itself a well-deserved pat on the back every once in a while.

It did just that on Saturday when the city's parks and recreation department celebrated 100 years of service during the Old Fashion Community Celebration at Defremery Park in West Oakland.

A couple of the city's strengths were on full display Saturday: incredible weather and legendary multiculturalism. A diverse mix of hundreds gathered throughout the daylong event, which featured something for everyone.

The city went all out to entertain and make the event family friendly. A lively tribute band got the crowd singing along and dancing as they performed songs from the late R&B singer Luther Vandross. There were clowns on stilts, three-on-three basketball tournaments and Junior Giants T-ball games. Families gathered around picnic tables to enjoy barbecue, whether they bought it from one of the multiple food vendors or cooked on the grill right there.
