BART, employee unions continue labor negotiations

From the Globe News Desk

Carlos RiveraEarlier this week, the Bay Area Rapid Transit System and its five employee unions came back to the table to discuss labor negotiations, which began April 1.

The transit agency is looking to cut $100 million in labor costs to help close a $310 million operating deficit over the next four years.

Operating without a contract since early July, many BART workers say they fear if all parties are unable to come to an agreement, the employees will be forced to strike.

Carlos Rivera, a spokesman for SEIU 1021 — which represents about 1,400 mechanics, custodians, safety inspectors and clerical employees — offered his thoughts about the ongoing contract negotiations during last week’s vote in Oakland.
