Police Chief Magnus: Community cooperation only way to stop violence City reels from six killings in one week
At press time, a total of six people had been killed with 10 others injured in a half-dozen shootings throughout the city and on nearby interstates over the last week. Police are still investigating and searching for suspects in the incidents. Richmond Police Chief Chris Magnus said the department is diligently working to solve the crimes, but believes that a cooperative effort with the community is the only way to halt the violence. Richmond is grimly on-pace to surpass its 2008 homicide rate of 27 for the entire year. To date, 26 people have been killed in Richmond. “We know the areas that are at higher risk and we know a number of individuals who are involved,” Magnus said. “We are working with parole and probation and the Office of Neighborhood Safety to promote diversion programs. But at the end of the day we’re stuck with the reality that there are a lot of individuals in the community who have a lot of anger and rage.” |
