Michael Jackson, the ‘King of Pop’:
A retrospective

Commentary by Marcus Osborne

Michael JacksonI hope we’ve all taken note of the day — June 25, 2009.

If you’re visiting from another planet, allow me to share this bit of heartbreaking, mind-numbing news: Legendary pop star, entertainer and philanthropist Michael Jackson died that day, a couple of months shy of his 51st birthday.

The expansiveness of the single-gloved icon’s fame is evidenced by the fact that no matter how ubiquitous that name, when you hear it, you only think of one person. And no matter where on this whirling heavenly body you may find yourself, the biggest celebrity in history can only claim true ownership of that name. No qualifiers. Think of the biggest name, the most famous celebrity you can think of … Michael Jackson is still more popular. And with good reason.

No one ever electrified an audience the way “MJ” did. By the time it’s all said and done, no one will have sold more recorded music than the “King of Pop.” The legendary dancing. That delicate speaking voice that morphed into the most recognizable, power-packed vocal delivery ever recorded. The glittery white socks. The high-water pants. The single glove. The moonwalk. All singularly unique. All Michael.
