Berkeley celebrates 22nd annual Juneteenth Festival
The event, “Celebrating the First Family: Building Villages of Home,” was a day to convey a message of positivity. “We wanted to show a positive image and show that we can do something that can change up the mindset of people,” said Sam Dyke, organizer and owner of People’s Bazaar in Berkeley. “Juneteenth” — a blend of “June” and Nineteenth” — commemorates June 19, 1865, when slaves in Galveston, Texas, learned of the Emancipation Proclamation, two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed it. Juneteenth marked the beginning of a new phase in African American history when emancipated slaves along with their former owners began to slowly travel the long road to equality and integration. |
