Music at Arroyo Park concert series kicks off with jazzy, mellow lineup

Music at Arroyo ParkTo say that Oakland City Councilwoman Desley Brooks has been at the center of some controversies during her tenure is an understatement.

From the routinely rowdy Oakland Raider games to the national headline-grabbing shooting of four Oakland police officers, East Oakland has all too often found itself in an unwanted spotlight.

Despite the grumblings, Brooks is intent on changing that perception. She’s doing it through well-received events such as the annual Music at Arroyo Park concert series. Brooks, along with legendary Oakland musician and activist Dwayne Wiggins, had a chance meeting at San Francisco’s Stern Grove Festival. As Brooks tells it, “We just kind of said, ‘Why doesn’t Oakland have something like this?’” And thus was born the annual free concert series.
