The California Newspaper Publishers Associated, a trade organization representing 500 California daily and weekly newspapers, announced the top winners of the Better Newspaper contest on Oct. 26.

   Among the awardees was the Globe for its 2008 Black History Edition, “Noted Black Women.” The Globe also placed in the top 10 percent of California newspapers in the front page category.
    Each year CNPA sponsors the Better Newspaper contest to recognize the most outstanding journalistic achievements published by daily and weekly California newspapers. Dailies and weeklies compete separately against papers with similar circulation designations within specific journalistic categories.
    The following other weekly Bay Area papers with similar circulations won top awards: San Francisco Business Times, Pleasanton Weekly, Berkeley Daily Planet, Berkeley Voice, Alameda Journal and the East Bay Business Times.
