African American leaders
in Bay Area urge no on Prop. 8

From the Globe Political Desk

Local African American leaders gathered for a rally on the steps of Oakland City Hall on Tuesday morning in protest of Proposition 8, an initiative on the ballot that would eliminate the right for same-sex couples to marry.

Those in attendance included Assemblyman Sandré Swanson, Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums, San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris, Eva Patterson of the Equal Justice Society, Reverend Amos Brown, Reverend Phillip Lawson, Reverend Byron Williams, Lynette Sweet, Reverend Hubert Ivery, Roland Stringfellow, Peggy Moore and Andre Spearman.
Opponents of Prop. 8 say that it singles out a group of Californians for unfair treatment.
Rally organizers stated, “African American communities and organizations understand discrimination and agree that Prop. 8 is unfair, unnecessary and wrong.”
