Richmond College Prep teacher Brenda Armstrong receives grant for new children’s program

From the Globe Richmond Desk

Richmond College Prep teacher Brenda Armstrong is one of only six recipients nationwide to receive an Academic Enrichment Grant from the McCarthey Dressman Education Foundation.
Armstrong’s $5,200 grant will fund the “Something Good This Way Comes” program. The program is based on the premise that children living in violent, impoverished communities can still achieve academic excellence if provided with great teachers, a welcoming campus and a rich academic and extracurricular experience. As part of the program, children ages 3- 11 will learn to write, perform and record their own music.
Since 2001 the McCarthey Dressman Education Foundation has provided more than $895,000 in scholarships and grants.
“The foundation is pleased to support those individuals and teams of educators like Ms. Armstrong who share our commitment to make teaching and learning exciting, innovative and motivating and to ensure that what happens in the classroom contributes to the highest development of each child and mentor and to our society as a whole,” said Sarah McCarthey, chair of the foundation’s board of trustees.
The application deadline for McCarthey Dressman Education Foundation grants and scholarships is May 1 of each year. Information and applications can be found at www.mccartheydressman.org.
