‘Hands in Motion’ exhibit to open at FLOAT Art Gallery

From the Globe Arts Desk

FLOAT Gallery, in conjunction with the African Outlet, will soon exhibit a sampling of the life’s work of Nigerian-born Bay Area artist Adekunle Kabir Adejare (Jareking). The opening reception for “Hands in Motion” will be held on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2007 from 6 to 9 p.m., and the exhibit will run from Jan. 16 through Feb. 15.
FLOAT
Proceeds will go to Paths of Native Africa, a nonprofit organization that undertakes self-sustaining projects, education and cultural exchange to help African people overcome hardships and improve their quality of life. For more information, visit www.pathsofnativeafrica. net.
Adejare chose to name the show “Hands in Motion” because of his extensive combinations of artistic media, including pen and ink drawings, batik painting, rice paper painting, quilting, appliqué, natural indigo dyeing, tie-dye and embroidery. He has also developed a technique that he calls “plywood etching.”
Adejare’s artwork illustrates historical events, current affairs, stories and folktales. “I strive to connect those educational and universal lessons to daily life,” he said.
The FLOAT Floatation Center and Art Gallery is located at 1091 Calcot Pl. #116 in Oakland.
The African Outlet has been home to quality African cargo since 1989 and will be displaying original masks and sculpture in the gallery. It provides an impressive selection of traditional African works, including sculpture, jewelry, clothing, fabric, masks, incense, treasures and ceremonial items. This venue is also available also for support and production of cultural celebrations and community programs. The owners, Horgan Edet and Judah Dwyer, are active founding members of Paths of Native Africa. The African Outlet is located at 524 Octavia in San Francisco.
