Richmond celebrates Cinco de Mayo

By Globe Staff

Last Saturday Cinco de Mayo celebrants strutted, rode and trotted from 23rd St. and Barrett to the city of San Pablo’s Maple Hall, where music, entertainment and heavily laden booths filled spaces inviting all to participate.

The theme of the celebration was “A Day for Our Children.” The parade was jointly hosted by the cities of Richmond and San Pablo.
Father Masseo Gonzales (from St. Paul’s Parish) appeared on stage with city and elected officials during the welcome. The entertainers included Foklorico Dance, Grupo Huehuecoyoti Filipino Dance, Karilagan, Mariachi Las Estrellas, Azteca Dancers, and Downtown Rhythm Latin Jazz, Funk & Old School. Mothers and Family Members of Victims of Violence and AMC from Hizpanic also participated. Special presentations were performed by East Bay Center for the Performing Arts, Son De La Tierra Folklorico, Iron Triangle Theater and the West African Music & Dance Ensemble.

On Sunday the Cinco de Mayo Committee hosted a festival at the Richmond Civic Center Plaza, where families gathered to listen to spectacular music, dance to Latin bands, eat and recreate in the sun. The entertainers included Richmond Eclipse, Richmond High Dancers, Banda Rio Verde, Mariachi Las Estrellas, Hizpanic, Joel Haguera and Liberados De La Sierra.
