Foothill Plaza Apartments set for major renovations

By Globe Staff

Residents in the Eastmont community will soon bear witness to a significant scenic change on Foothill Blvd. across from Frick Middle School. Close to $10.2 million has been slated to renovate the Foothill Plaza Apartments, located at 6311 Foothill Blvd., which were originally built in 1982
.     Councilwoman Desley Brooks worked with city staff to direct monies to support this project, which is being spearheaded by Oakland Community Housing, Inc. (OCHI).    “OCHI’s plans for the new facade, landscaping and interior unit modifications are sure to instill a renewed sense of pride for the complex residents and community,” said Brooks.
.     Gradual improvements to the property will begin within the next 12 months. Initial improvements will target the building’s exterior and include a renovated entranceway and improved landscaping and lighting.
“We are very hopeful that this project will build up the local community,” said Dwight Dickerson, executive director of OCHI. “Our goal in acquiring Foothill Plaza is to make needed improvements to the property and contribute to a positive environment for residents and neighbors while still preserving affordability.”
The final rehabilitation phase, expected for completion in spring 2008, will involve structural and interior design changes, a new roof, balconies, walkways and other upgrades throughout the building,.     Additionally, comprehensive social services will be offered to residents, along with access to community facilities at the adjacent OCHI Kenneth Henry Court property.
