Jerome WigginsLocal youth advocate Jerome Wiggins has been selected to receive the 2009-2010 California Interscholastic Federation Service Award. The Distinguish Service Award is the highest honor awarded by the CIF, which oversees high school sports in California.

Wiggins, a 36-year resident of Berkeley, has served on the Board of Managers of the CIF North Cost Section since 1994. From 2000 to 2009 he served on the section’s executive committee. He currently sits on the section’s selection committee for basketball. He was recently appointed by the Alameda County School Boards Association as its representative to the North Coast Section for a sixth consecutive three-year term.

“Jerry has demonstrated time and time again his commitment to meeting the critical needs of young people in the community,” said Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-Calif.).

Wiggins is a long-time advocate for public school financing and drop-out prevention programs. As a parent to two sons, Wiggins served on the Berkeley Unified School District budget committee and on the baseball coaching staff of Oakland Babe Ruth, the Oakland Oaks and the Oakland Rattlers. In 2001, the Rattlers traveled to Havana, Cuba, to present the U.S. against the Cuban Jr. Olympics national team.

The CIF Board of Managers will present Wiggins with his award during a ceremony in Walnut Creek on Jan. 29.
