The Princess Project seeks prom dress donations for Bay Area girls

From the Globe News Desk

The Princess Project will be collecting new and nearly new formal gowns and accessories as part of its 2010 dress drive between Feb. 8 and 19. The organization is depending on the generosity of women and companies throughout the Bay Area to help send local girls to prom.

“Prom is one of the most important events for a high school student, but some disadvantaged teems will miss their prom because they can’t afford to buy a dress,” said Quinn Donnelly, president of The Princess Project board of directors. “Girls spend an average of $750 on prom, with a formal dress alone easily costing $200. We’re asking women throughout the Bay Area to clean out their closets and help us make a young girl’s dreams come true.”

Since The Princess Project began in 2002, the organization has provided over 12,000 girls with free dresses and accessories. This year, The Princess Project hopes to serve over 3,500 Bay Area high school girls through dress giveaway events in Oakland, San Francisco and Silicon Valley with the support of 350 volunteers.

Fashionable formal gowns, party dresses and cocktail dresses in all lengths, sizes, fabrics and colors will be accepted. They must be dry-cleaned and on hangers. All donated dresses should be less than five years old.

Dresses and accessories will be collected at the following retail locations between Feb. 8 and 19:

  • Stoneridge Mall (One Stoneridge Mall, Pleasanton)
  • Tootsies in Oakland (5525 College Ave., Oakland)
  • Tootsies in Danville (175 E. Prospect Ave., Danville)
  • Crossroads (locations pending)
  • Club Sport (350 Bollinger Canyon Lane, San Ramon)
  • Labels (1367 N. Main St., Walnut Creek)
